Jonathan Moritz

Saxophonist of the UP, the Amalgam quartet, Trio Caveat, and Evil Eye quartet.

Jonathan Moritz is a saxophonist living in Brooklyn, NY. He has developed several groups under his leadership, which play jazz music in a new way. Amalgam is a quartet playing original compositions stretching out in free improvisation. Led by Jonathan Moritz, guitarist Jonathan Goldberger, bassist Eivind Opsvik, and drummer Joe Tomino create textures that are open to flux and flow within the compositions. Trio Caveat, a collaborative with Jonathan Moritz, bassist James Ilgenfritz and drummer John McLellan have created a whole new improvised sound together based on principals of composition, development, time and most of all, care. Evil Eye, a quartet co-led with drummer Mike Pride, has developed the idiom of jazz further by adding elements of pure sound and texture to the improvisations. Nate Wooley plays trumpet with a new approach and when brought back to the meters played in the quartet brings a fresh twist to the group sound. Jonathan Moritz is a warm toned tenor saxophonist with a story telling gift. His playing is remindful of Sonny Rolins in terms of his Rolinsesque sound, rhythmic and motivic improvisational development. -L.A.Jazz Scene Jonathan has a great big sound reminiscent of earlier player in the tradition but plays with beautifully complex sense of harmony and rhythm. He has toured in Europe and the US and performed with musicians such as Daniel Carter, Eugene Chadbourne, Andrew D'Angelo, Chris Defort, Trevor Dunn, Ken Filiano, Vinnie Golia, Lindsay Horner, Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris Mike Pride, and Nate Wooley.
